Statement from AKAKU: Maui Community Television CEO/President Jay April Responds to Court Hearing in Akaku vs. DCCA & State of Hawaii: “We are encouraged that Judge Joel August indicated support for free speech and an interest in seeing that Hawaii’s publics are ensured access to the ‘marketplace of ideas’; however, we are disappointed with the court’s decision today to continue our motion for summary judgment and not give finality to the outstanding problems with PEG access and the RFP process. Support Free Speech! Judge August to Decide on Future of Public Access

Show your support for public access and Akaku on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 8:15 a.m. at the Second Circuit Court in Wailuku. We are asking supporters to dress in black and appear in court as Judge Joel August presides over Akaku’s case against the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) and the State of Hawaii. Through a controversial and unlawful request for proposal (RFP) process that would put PEG access under the influence of state bureaucracies instead of the general public and community organizations, the DCCA and the State of Hawaii have been attempting to take the public out of public access .  (more…)

TV News Production Workshop

KAHULUI, HI, January 15 – Akaku Maui Community Television will hold a “Maui Daily Segment Producer Workshop” on Thursday, January 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in its studio offices at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului. The workshop will train community members how to become citizen video journalists for Akaku’s community-based news program, the “Maui Daily”. The workshop costs $10. Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
