A Poi-fect Day to Appreciate Taro

Akaku: Maui Community Television will be joining the festivities of the 16th Annual East Maui Taro Festival this weekend beginning Saturday, Apr. 26. Akaku will be videotaping a variety of activities at the event, offering free introduction to TV production classes, and managing the Akaku informational booth for festival attendees to ask questions, record their shout-outs and qualify to win prizes. Jay April: SB1789 Deserves a Democratic Standard Before It’s Too Late

In a media universe dominated by big government and corporate points of view, public, education and government (PEG) access stations in Hawaii are an oasis where people turn for the straight dope on just about anything. Most of their content is produced by local independent thinkers; all of it is nondiscriminatory, uncensored and unfiltered. This is truly a community asset—not a state asset—a local venue where anyone can come and talk story.

Senate Bill 1789 was introduced at the State legislature this season to ensure maximum public input into decision making that concerns the future of cable access stations. (more…)

State PEGs Tune Into “Same Channel” to Support Free Speech

Hawaii People’s Fund Media Justice review panel granted $7,400 to Akaku in mid-March to launch the Free Speech Hawaii Coalition, a collaborative effort to build community and ensure diverse points of view on issues of free speech across the state. The coalition is made possible by the commitment of all of Hawaii’s public, educational and governmental (PEG) access organizations, including Akaku for Maui County, `Ōlelo Community Television on O`ahu, Na Leo O Hawaii on Big Island and Ho`ike: Kaua`i Community Television.

Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
