Friday at Midnight Kicks Off Special 24-hour Broadcast For A Full Saturday (Aug. 2) of Media Reform

Akaku: Maui Community Television will be airing 24 hours of a collection of presentations from the 2008 National Conference for Media Reform (NCMR) held in Minneapolis in June. The “Special 24 Hour Broadcast” on Akaku Channel 54 will begin at 12:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 (midnight Friday night) and end at 12:00 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 (midnight Saturday night). (more…)

Franchise Renewal Negotiations for `Olelo Affect Neighbor Islands Too

On Tuesday, July 15, 2008, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) held a meeting at McKinley High School on O`ahu to gather community input regarding `Olelo Community Television’s upcoming cable television franchise renewal negotiations with Oceanic Time Warner cable.

Neighboring islands, whose franchise contracts are not yet up for renewal, are following this process closely as the outcome of negotiations for `Olelo will likely affect cable subscribers throughout Hawaii, and determine future franchise negotiations with neighbor isle community access providers, including Akaku: Maui Community Television, Na Leo O Hawaii and Ho`ike: Kauai Community Television. The radio station at Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku), KAKU-LP 88.5 FM, received a generous gift from Jonathan Starr who donated a number of professional-grade equipment items and software to help upgrade the organization’s budding radio program. (more…)

Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
