Film Screening for Producers Night!

Independent community producers are invited to the digital lounge at Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului, on Friday, July 11 from 6:00– 8:30 p.m. to view the 1993 documentary film, “Visions of Light”. Community members are encouraged to share their opinions and perspectives at “Producers Night,” Akaku’s media salon event dedicated entirely to producers. The event is free, and includes light pupus and beverages. Interested individuals are urged to confirm their attendance by calling 871-5554.

“The concept for this Friday’s ‘Producers Night’ was inspired by some of Akaku’s Field Camera students,” explains Sara Tekula, Akaku’s Director of Education. “After a day of learning how to employ camera techniques, we’d come back and see how light shaped our images. It always leads to eye-opening discussions.”

“Visions of Light” (1993) explores the cinematography of more than 100 films, ranging from the 1930s into the 1990s. Interviews with directors of photography shed light on they employed new inventions in film, including sound, color and widescreen to expand the art of cinematography.
Continues Tekula, “I hope people will see this screening as a way to not only learn from some of the 20th century’s most respected directors of photography, but also as a way they can learn from each other.”
“Producers Night” is a monthly media salon series that provides a space for community producers to come together, exchange thoughts, meet Akaku’s staff, and express their vision for Akaku’s producer network. Independent community producers have been meeting at Akaku for this media salon series since March, when they expressed a preference to convene on the second Friday of every month. The media salon is designed to facilitate learning among community producers in an informal and casual setting.
Akaku staff will be present to facilitate the event and to offer support to the Akaku producer community. For more information, call 808-871-5554, or visit Akaku: Maui Community Television at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului.
