(Summer Camp Application ‘08)
Designed to encourage creative learning during the Summer Break, Akaku has launched fun camps geared for Maui youth who would like to see their own videos on their islands’ community access channels. Akaku is currently accepting applications (due Fri. July 11) for the next camp, Storytelling with Video, which will begin on Monday, July 21 and last till Friday, July 26.
“Storytelling with Video” explores techniques and tricks to bring campers’ story ideas to life in a short film.
Both camps will convene in the Akaku Media Lab at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului, and each weeklong camp costs $200. Scholarships are available to motivated applicants who are passionate about video production and provide evidence of financial need.

“Music videos and short films are two creative ways video is used in modern-day storytelling,” says Sara Tekula, Akaku Education Director, whose production credits include working on documentary films and music videos with such bands as The Shins and The Academy Is, as well as hip hop artist Snoop Dogg. “I am excited to share what I know about these subjects, and to learn what Maui youth have up their creative sleeves.”
Because space is limited, only 10 students will be selected for each camp. Upon completion of the camp, students will be “youth-certified” to borrow cameras and use editing equipment free-of-charge in order to create and contribute content for community viewing on Akaku TV channels 52, 53, and 54.
