Calling All News Junkies! Akaku Airs National Convention Coverage

Akaku Channel 54 Airs a Democracy Now! Two-Hour Special Beginning Monday, Aug. 25

Akaku: Maui Community Television will broadcast on Akaku Channel 54 Democracy Now!’s “Breaking With Convention: War, Peace and the Presidency,” the nonprofit news organization’s nightly two-hour special on the Democratic and Republican National Conventions (DNC and RNC, respectively). Broadcast dates and times are as follows:

DNC: Monday, Aug. 25 through Friday, Aug. 29, 5 – 7 am (same day repeat airing at 5 – 7 pm)
RNC: Monday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 5, 5 – 7 am (same day repeat airing at 5 – 7 pm)

Amy Goodman and the Democracy Now! news crew will be in Denver and St. Paul, covering the 2008 conventions “from the streets to the suites to the convention floor”.

“We’re pleased for the opportunity to offer a double dose of Democracy Now! coverage so they can share in the excitement of both national conventions,” says Jay April, President and CEO of Akaku. “Some of Akaku’s most ardent supporters have referred to themselves as ‘Akaku junkies’ because they know they can get their ‘fix’ of straight politics and news on their community access channels.”

Residents of Maui Nui who do not subscribe to cable, can also view this special coverage on Akaku.org. About Democracy Now
Democracy Now! is a daily, non-profit, national, independent news hour hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S. out of its New York City headquarters, Democracy Now! is broadcast on Pacifica, NPR, community, and college radio stations; on public access, PBS, satellite television (DISH network: Free Speech TV ch. 9415 and Link TV ch. 9410; DIRECTV: Link TV ch. 375); and on the internet. DN!’s podcast is one of the most popular on the web.

Democracy Now!’s War and Peace Report provides its audience with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts. In addition, Democracy Now! hosts real debates-debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other.
