The architects of public, education and government (PEG) access policy, former FCC commissioner Nicholas Johnson and media activist George Stoney, had a vision for community television (PEG access) almost four decades ago: they wanted to ensure true participatory localism in mass media in which cable companies would pay “rent”, in the form of franchise payments, for using public rights of way. Akaku Honors Independent Producers During October Media Salon Guest Series, Friday, Oct. 24, 6-8:30 pm, Free Event! Community Welcome!

Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) will host on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, from 6-8:30 pm, a team of independent citizen correspondents at a special Media Salon Guest Speaker Series acknowledging their important contribution to Akaku’s live coverage of the State primary elections. Seven pairs of independent community producers were dispatched to polling stations across the island to obtain footage and report on events, which they provided to Akaku for inclusion in its live, interactive Primary coverage. Moloka`i & Maui Join Voices Against Procurement

Last week, more than 100 residents from the islands of Moloka`i and Maui testified before representatives of the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) against the agency’s proposed rules, pertaining to the designation and selection of public, educational and governmental (“PEG”) access organizations. Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
