Akaku: Closed for New Year’s!

The studio offices and media lab of Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului, and the Akaku: Moloka`i Media Center, in Kaunakakai, will be closed to the public to allow staff the opportunity to celebrate New Year’s with their families, friends and loved ones. Holiday hours will be as follows:

New Year’s Closures:

  • Wed., Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve: Open till 3:33 pm!
  • Thurs., Jan. 1, 2009, New Year’s Day: Closed
  • Fri., Jan. 2: Closed
  • Sat. Jan. 3: Limited service on Maui location, by appointment only. (more…)

FCC Commissioner Visits Maui, Promises to Support Community TV

FCC Commissioner Jonathan S. Adelstein, one of two veteran democrats on the Federal Communications Commission, visited Maui recently to discuss the transition from analog to digital of over-the-air television broadcast signals-a change that will take place across the Hawaiian islands on January 15, 2009. Akaku: Maui Community Television enjoyed the privilege of interviewing Adelstein about this, the important role community access television plays for localism, and the urgency to protect this community asset for the benefit of the “people who [...] own the airwaves”. Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
