Akaku: Maui Community Television to close in observance of Good Friday

Controversial TV program can start community debate and lead to positive change

Fans of public access haven’t always agreed with everything that airs on Akaku’s cable television channels. Once in a blue moon some programs are vulgar and at times down-right offensive to community members. So who gets to take that media content off the air?

“In order to maintain and respect people’s right to freedom of speech, which is protected by the First Amendment, it’s important to remember that PEG Access channels are one of few media outlets that serve the public interest,” says Pete Sullivan, Akaku Program Director, who programs every video submission in the pukas available day or night across Akaku’s three channels. The legislature is going to pass a law setting up a Hawaii Communications Commission to help bring faster internet to Hawaii. In the process, many legislators are unaware that PUBLIC ACCESS TV is being CUT OUT of the bill by a few House and Senate members, the Governor and other powerful lobbyists.

Akaku: Maui Community Television (Akaku) empowers the community's voice through access to media. Akaku is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that airs content created by the community for the community. Community members on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i are encouraged to submit programming to the station, create their own television shows and have their voices heard by fellow community members.
