Akaku will host award-winning filmmaker Harriette Yahr at Akaku’s Producer Night on Wednesday, July 8 from 6-8:30 p.m. at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului. Independent community producers and community members will be able to ask questions and “talk-story” with Yahr after the screening of her short film “Baker’s Men”. The event includes light pupus and beverages and a suggested donation of $5 is welcomed. Interested individuals should R.S.V.P to reserve a seat, as space will be limited in the Media Lab.

Yahr’s latest film “Baker’s Men” is a short comedy about two little girls playing a game of patty-cake in a playground. This modern-day nursery rhyme takes a different turn, as the girls begin to “de-construct” their game and play into social gender roles. IndieWire called Yahr’s film “hilarious.” “Baker’s Men” aired on the Sundance Channel and is distributed on DVD by Spiritual Cinema Circle.

Community producers will hear about her experiences as a filmmaker, writer, and producer and will be able to discuss the art and science of filmmaking. Yahr’s short films have won numerous awards and have screened at film festivals worldwide including Telluride, Woodstock, and Feminale in Germany.

Yahr is not only recognized for her years as an award-winning filmmaker but is also held in high esteem for her writing which appeared in IndieWire, BlackBook Magazine, The Miami Herald, Salon.com, and Hana Hou! She obtained her B.A. with honors in Film Studies from Dartmouth, and her MFA from UC, San Diego. She also teaches screenplay and filmmaking workshops, including one July 11th in Haiku via her MauiFilmSchool.com.

“Producers’ Night” is a monthly event series that provides a space for community producers to come together, exchange thoughts, meet Akaku staff, and express their vision for Akaku’s community producer network. These events are designed to facilitate learning among community producers in an informal and casual setting.

Akaku staff will be present to facilitate the event and to offer support to the Akaku producer community. For more information, call 871-5554, log on to our website at www.akaku.org or visit Akaku: Maui Community Television at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului.
