In the Michael Clark Studio, we will have a simultaneous “Free Speech” Telethon to raise funds for Akakū. Local politicians will be manning the phones in the studio to answer your calls for pledges and donations to your Community Television channels.

KAHULUI, HI, AUGUST 19 – With the State Primary elections nearing, it is imperative for every voter to get to know the candidates and what they stand for. Akakū: Maui Community Television has been working diligently to give you that opportunity. Akakū has given every candidate from, U.S. Senator candidates to candidates for OHA Trustees and the Board of Education contenders, a chance to share who they are, where they come from and what they stand for.
Akakū has contacted each of the candidates and asked them to come into our studio to record a short message to the voters. To ensure fairness among all, each individual was given a 3-minute time limit, no editing was done and much effort was put into making sure each person was shot identically as far as backdrop, lighting and framing of the shot. This daunting task was led by Akaku Director of Productions, Emily Sullivan and crewed by Akakū's talented student interns. “It was a tremendous learning experience and exciting to be working in a field with unfamiliar people who could be tomorrowʻs leaders,” said intern, Dana Fulton.

The eight interns, hired by Akakū for the summer, were the driving force of the project. Offering their personal insights and tremendous talents, they quickly took the reins and took charge of every step of the project. From conception, to producing, shooting and editing, with the help of Akakū staff members, the interns were able to produce engaging material that seeks to persuade teens and young adults to drive responsibly.
A showing of all the “Arrive Alive” PSAs has been scheduled for August 26, 2010, 5:30 pm at Akakū: Maui Community Television, located at 333 Dairy Road, Kahului. The PSAs will also be broadcast repeatedly on Akakū Channels 52, 53, and 54, available to 57,000 cable homes in the Maui County and on our website at www.akaku.org.The PSA’s will also be distributed and available to all broadcast, cable and internet television stations and outlets statewide. The “Arrive Alive” project was made possible due to the generous grant provided by the Atherton Family Foundation, funding by the Department of Defense Grant Funding through the Paxen Group and In-kind donations by Akakū: Maui Community Television.
Kahului, Hi. - The countdown to the State's Request For Proposals (RFP) for Public, Education and Government (PEG) Access Centers has re-started. Friday, August 6th, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) denied Akakū’s second protest of the State’s Request For Proposal (RFP) for PEG Access centers in Hawaii. This re-starts the process of the RFP. Proposals are due in approximately sixty-five days.
According to an unnamed source, there is an organization ready to take over the PEG Access centers statewide. This means that your Akakū: Maui Community Television could be taken over and run by an organization on Oahu. Akakū attorney, Anthony Rankin says that Akakū will file an appeal of the protest this week. Stay tuned for more information regarding the State's attempt to take away your Voice and local control of the media in our community.
