Akakū Upstairs: Tandy MacKenzie Film Screening with Writer & Producer Wayne Moniz

Akakūʻs May salon features the film screening of ʻTandy MacKenzie: Hawaii”s Greatest Opera Star.ʻ The documentary traces the life of the Maui born singer from his humble origins in Hāna in 1892 to his tragic death in Los Angeles 1963. The film covers his years at Kamehameha Schools, his discovery by American opera star John McCormick, his training in Canada, and his appearance across the globe. The film was produced by writer & narrator Wayne Moniz, as well as Bob Mistysyn with Maui Film and Research. Chivo Ching-Johnson will moderate a discussion with Wayne after the screening.
