INTRO TO AKAKŪ AND PUBLIC ACCESS MEDIA

This class is an orientation to Akakū’s mission, facilities, services, plus our policies and procedures. You’ll learn why public access TV came to be, how it works, and the role it plays in our community. Find out how to engage with our center, to put your stories to air. This orientation is a prerequisite for certifying in all TV production classes at Akakū.  This self-paced class is online, to register for the class email education@akaku.org or Call 871-5554! INTRODUCTION TO RADIO & KAKU

KAKU 88.5 FM is Akakūʻs low-powered local talk radio station. If youʻve ever dreamed of being a radio personality, this class ifs your first step! Youʻll learn the basics of radio, FCC rules, about the KAKU studio and the process to apply for your own show! INTRODUCTION TO TV STUDIO TRAINING

Learn our traditional studio training in four modules, at your own pace. This pre-requisite 2 hour orientation will introduce you to the studio environment, its specialized equipment, and the various positions in the studio and control room. After, you can decide to take one, or all, of our modules. Each module covers different studio positions and enables you to volunteer on a show in that role. Completion of all four modules, plus Intro to Akakū, certifies members to reserve our studio for your own production! TV STUDIO PRODUCTION FOR GROUPS

Creating a TV show in Akakū’s Studio A is both fun and challenging. This immersive four-day class will introduce your team to all of the crew positions and equipment required to produce a simple TV program, ready to air. Your group will learn how to set lights, adjust cameras, test microphones, create graphics, and direct your own show through hands-on training. Graduate members are eligible to reserve the studio for their own programs. Call or email education@akaku.org to schedule your group. (4 student minimum, or by approval)

STUDIO MODULE 1: PRODUCING, DIRECTING & CREW RECRUITMENT

Whatʻs your idea? Learn what you will need specific to your idea!  Understand the roles of being a Producer and the various Directorsʻ role for your show! You will leave with a clear sense of what it takes to plan and execute a studio program. Find out how to find certified crew members and incentivise them to help with your show!. 3 hours. STUDIO MODULE 2: LIGHTS, SET, CAMERA & AUDIO

Light is the paint on a filmmakers palette and adding light in just the right way can turn a mundane shot into a masterpiece. In this hands-on session, you will learn about the different types of stage lights, and how to focus, diffuse and tint them. Look into the art of set design and the elements to make your set pop! You will learn the essential camera controls, like white balance, zoom, and focus, while practicing shots, angles, and camera moves. Learn about mics and routing, leveling audio. 3 hours. STUDIO MODULE 3: SWITCHER, RECORDING, PLAYBACK

The Tricaster switcher allows you to preview and choose which camera or source will be ʻliveʻ or recorded. Learn how ti import content to the DDRʻs for ʻplaybackʻ during your show. Students will also become familiar with the digital recording decks used to capture a studio program and export it to air. 3 hours. STUDIO MODULE 4: COMPUTER GRAPHICS & TELEPROMPTER 

Learn how to create a and display titles, credits, and “lower third” graphics inside the Tricaster for overlays in your show. The teleprompter allows a scripted speech or dialog to be projected onto a one-way mirror mounted to the front of a studio camera, so that the talent can look directly into the lens while they read the script as it scrolls past. Youʻll also learn how to load and edit scripts, and to adjust the prompterʻs scrolling speed to match the readerʻs pace. 3 hours. FIELD CAMERA OPERATION & TECHNIQUES

New Hybrid class! Learn how to safely operate one of our video cameras for in the field, along with attaching and leveling microphones! Get the principles of shot composition and the stages of production via online learning. After completing the online quiz, schedule an in-person appointment to get hands on! Check the Panasonic camera out after your appointment and schedule its return to have a critique of your shots and have any issues or questions answered. Certified students get camera check out privileges for approved projects. 4+ hours. By Appointment, Call or email education@akaku.org for your appointment!

BASIC VIDEO STORYTELLING AND FIELD PRODUCTION FOR GROUPS

Video production is visual storytelling. Whether your passion is capturing sporting events, community gatherings, news stories, interviews or scenery, there is always a story to be told. Get your team hands-on operating our HD video camcorders and properly using tripods and microphones in the field. This project based training includes the rudiments of editing in Final Cut Pro X. Students will produce short stories while training to build confidence. Graduate members are eligible to reserve camera packages and our Media Lab edit bays. EDITING WITH iMOVIE

Learning to edit with Apple’s iMovie software is fun and simple to learn. You’ll learn how to import content, basic editing techniques and using graphics. Plus, see how to animate still photos, add music, voiceovers or special effects. This training is hands-on with supplied content to edit with. Graduate members are eligible to reserve and use our Media Lab editing bays. Offered once a quarter, see the calendar below for dates!

BASIC MOBILE VIDEO PRODUCTION

This is a one-day crash course in basic mobile video production, using an Apple i-Device. Learn to shoot with both the on-board camera and the Filmic Pro video app. Edit short projects using i-Movie, the editing software that comes free with all Apple products. 
This class is a pre-requisite for more advanced mobile training. Graduate members are eligible to check out mobile kits to use with their own iPhones. This class is by appointment, email education@akaku.org or scheduled 1x/month, see calendar below for dates to book!  7 hours

ONLINE VIDEO: 4 Things to Know

Presenting your best video and audio for your online meetings, webinars and recordings are essential to conferencing platforms. We cover framing, audio, lighting and backgrounds with demonstrations.
Akakū offers this class as a free tutorial on our tutorials page. Groups of 4 or more may have a Live session of this material by appointment via Zoom. Call 871-5554 or email education@akaku.org to schedule your class!  1 hour

ZOOM & The 2-person Interview

The free version of Zoom is perfect for conducting, and recording an interview for distribution. Learn basic settings and protocols to get the best recorded video image and audio. Plus find out how to pre-produce to get the interview your after!
