You’ll learn why public access TV came to be, how it works, and the role it plays in our community. Find out how to engage with our center, to put your stories to air. INTRODUCTION TO RADIO & KAKU
KAKU 88.5 FM is Akakūʻs low-powered local talk radio station. If youʻve ever dreamed of being a radio personality, this class ifs your first step! Youʻll learn the basics of radio, FCC rules, about the KAKU studio and the process to apply for your own show! INTRODUCTION TO TV STUDIO TRAINING
Learn our traditional studio training in four modules, at your own pace. This pre-requisite 2 hour orientation will introduce you to the studio environment, its specialized equipment, and the various positions in the studio and control room. After, you can decide to take one, or all, of our modules. Each module covers different studio positions and enables you to volunteer on a show in that role. Completion of all four modules, plus Intro to Akakū, certifies members to reserve our studio for your own production! TV STUDIO PRODUCTION FOR GROUPS
Creating a TV show in Akakū’s Studio A is both fun and challenging. This immersive four-day class will introduce your team to all of the crew positions and equipment required to produce a simple TV program, ready to air. Your group will learn how to set lights, adjust cameras, test microphones, create graphics, and direct your own show through hands-on training. Graduate members are eligible to reserve the studio for their own programs. Call or email education@akaku.org to schedule your group. (4 student minimum, or by approval)

STUDIO MODULE 1: LIGHTS, SET, CAMERA & AUDIO
Light is the paint on a filmmakers palette and adding light in just the right way can turn a mundane shot into a masterpiece. In this hands-on session, you will learn about the different types of stage lights, and how to focus, diffuse and tint them. Look into the art of set design and the elements to make your set pop! You will learn the essential camera controls, like white balance, zoom, and focus, while practicing shots, angles, and camera moves. Learn about mics and routing, leveling audio. 3 hours. STUDIO MODULE 2: COMPUTER GRAPHICS, TELEPROMPTER & PLAYBACK
Learn how to create and display titles, credits, and “lower third” graphics in a studio show. The teleprompter allows a scripted speech or dialog to be projected onto a one-way mirror mounted to the front of a studio camera, so that the talent can look directly into the lens while they read the script as it scrolls past. Youʻll also learn how to load and edit scripts, and to adjust the prompterʻs scrolling speed to match the readerʻs pace. Learn how to load in other files and preproduced videos into the ʻplaybackʻ computer, and operate the software to play them back in your show. 3 hours. STUDIO MODULE 3: RECORDING, SWITCHER & CCU
The switcher allows you to preview and choose which camera or source will be ʻliveʻ or recorded. Students will also become familiar with the digital recording decks used to capture a studio program and export it to air. STUDIO MODULE 4: PRODUCING, DIRECTING & CREW RECRUITMENT
Whether youʻre filming a scripted drama or capturing news on-the-fly, ʻpreproductionʻ planning is critical to telling the story you intended. Scripting, drafting interview questions, constructing a run-down, and timing segments in advance all help to ensure success in the end. You will leave with a clear sense of what it takes to plan and execute a studio program. Skills taught include directing talent, using hand signals and headsets, timing your show and “calling the shots.” Find out how to find certified crew members and incentivise them to help with your show!. 3 hours. FIELD CAMERA OPERATION & TECHNIQUES
Learn how to safely operate one of our video cameras for in the field, along with attaching and leveling microphones! Get the principles of shot composition and the stages of production. Check the camera out after class and schedule its return to have a critique of your shots and have any issues or questions answered. That same day successfully build and breakdown the camera package and pass a short quiz to certify. Certified members have camera check out privileges for approved projects. 4+ hours. BASIC VIDEO STORYTELLING AND FIELD PRODUCTION FOR GROUPS
Video production is visual storytelling. Whether your passion is capturing sporting events, community gatherings, news stories, interviews or scenery, there is always a story to be told. Get your team hands-on operating our HD video camcorders and properly using tripods and microphones in the field. This project based training includes the rudiments of editing in Final Cut Pro X. Students will produce short stories while training to build confidence. Graduate members are eligible to reserve camera packages and our Media Lab edit bays. EDITING WITH iMOVIE
Learning to edit with Apple’s iMovie software is fun and simple to learn. You’ll learn how to import content, basic editing techniques and using graphics. Plus, see how to animate still photos, add music, voiceovers or special effects. This training is hands-on with supplied content to edit with. Graduate members are eligible to reserve and use our Media Lab editing bays. Offered once a quarter, see the calendar below for dates!

EDITING WITH FINAL CUT PRO X
Final Cut Pro X is a professional program that allows maximum creativity when editing video. This class will introduce you to the essential features and techniques that editors employ. You will learn to navigate the program, import content, create a project and events, transitions, visual effects, add titles and graphics, as well as how to level audio. Graduate members may reserve Akakū Media Lab edit bays to edit their own shows for air. This class is only offered once a year! Email education@akaku.org to express your interest!
