Jamil Newirth to Share a Story of Survival on Akakū, January 14, 2019

www.akaku.orgKahului, HI: Jamil Newirth, a Maui attorney, is using his personal cancer battle to give others hope. He will be sharing his story of survival with a new video to be aired on Akakū Maui Community Media’s Akaku Blue Channel 55 starting January 14, 2019.
Jamil was told he had 17 months to live. That was six years ago. Today, thanks to Dr. Linda Liau and his other doctors at the UCLA Brain Tumor Center, Jamil is beating the odds and taking in all that life has to offer.
Since his brain tumor surgery, Jamil has passed the bar exam to become a practicing attorney here on Maui, completed the Honolulu Marathon and is still able to partake in his favorite activities in and out of the ocean. His positive outlook, zest for life and community support is certainly a big part of his continued recovery.
While fighting his own battle, he even started a nonprofit, called UVSC, which stands for U VERSUS CANCER or US VERSUS CANCER. UVSC was founded to give others fighting cancer the support and hope they need to fight and live on.
UVSC’s mission is to provide hope by raising funds for individuals fighting cancer, as well as supporting cutting-edge research for a cure. In order to do this, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit brings together a community of unique individuals who want to help in the fight by sharing their ideas, money, skills, and time.
UVSC is looking for community support for its next event, the Trucker Dukes Memorial 5K presented by UVSC, which is set for Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Old Maui High School. Registration for March 9, 2019, family-friendly event, will be live on www.uvsc.org
within the next couple days, so please be sure to visit their website and sign up. Last year’s Trucker Dukes Memorial 5k presented by UVSC was a huge success with over 300 participants and even more virtual runners.
The 5K event is being held in honor of Trucker Dukes, a three-year-old Maui boy whose courageous battle against Stage 4 neuroblastoma inspired thousand nation-wide. Unfortunately, little Trucker lost his battle in March 2017. Be sure to visit uvsc.org in the next couple days to sign up and help honor the inspiring life of Trucker Dukes.
